ZagAroundI’ve been working on Kate Oates’ Zagaround Blanket available at Love Knitting. It’s knit in the round and the pattern is easily memorized after you’ve done a couple rounds. I’d planned to use a different yarn, but the stitches just didn’t pop the way I wanted. Fortunately I had this salmon-y colored merino yarn in my stash and it looks great. I had to buy another ball of yarn from a different lot but I’ll use it on the border where it’s unlikely anyone will notice and if they do, we’ll call it a design element. 🙂

The blanket grows quickly and since it’s knit in the round I found myself crowding the stitches onto my needles. Since I carry my projects all over the place, I don’t like taking the chance of the stitches working their way off the needles. My solution? Use multiple circular needles. It’s essentially the same as using DPNs, only larger. The pattern is repeated in four sections, so a logical division is one section per needle. I don’t have (or want) four circulars the same size so I’m using three sets. One set has a really long cable and holds two sections while the other two have the same cable length and hold one section each.

The trick to using multiple circular needles in this fashion is to make sure to work one set at a time as you knit around the project. The other needles act as stitch holders when not active. It helps if the cables are a different color or length or if the needles themselves are a different material but it’s not required.

You can use the same technique when knitting flat or back and forth as well, only the work is turned at the end of the row. It’s also an alternative to magic loop when knitting hats, gloves and socks, especially if you want to knit both gloves or socks at the same time. Check out this video which illustrates how to get started.

And now…this week’s Featured Post!

My favorite post this week is this bohemian chic set of crocheted headphones from Set Free My Gypsy Soul. They are incredibly cute and if you crochet, I’m sure you know someone who would love a pair. Everything you need to make this project is included in the tutorial, from yarn suggestions to detailed instructions for making the flowers. Enjoy!
