Our apartment doesn’t have air conditioning and for all but a few weeks out of the year it’s not a big deal. During the hot part of the day we close the blinds to help cool the house. When we’re outside we’ll stick to the streets and outdoor spaces that are shaded. When the shade isn’t enough, I use a fan or abanico (ah-bah-NEE-co). Every woman has a couple stashed around the house, or in her purse. Some coordinate their fans with their outfits.

Abanicos are widely available in the shops and the price depends on the size, where and how it’s made and whether or not it’s handpainted. Even men carry abanicos although they aren’t as decorative.  The problem with carrying a fan in your purse is that it tends to get roughed up. To prevent that I bought the fan on the bottom right at a craft fair. It came with the handmade leather case which fits in most of my bags.

My personal favorite is the handpainted fan on the left. I bought it in Madrid a couple years ago. The colors remind me of the hills loaded with wheat. I replaced the plain fan with my pretty one which had been languishing in a drawer for fear of ruining it. It’s a little bit taller than the leather case, but so far so good. The dark fan on the top right was also handpainted and bought at another craft fair. The building is the cathedral in Valladolid. It wasn’t a smart purchase. I bought it because I had a lovely discussion with the woman who painted it but I rarely use it.
