Make a Baby Afghan From Reclaimed Yarn

Last Updated on August 9, 2017 by lydiaf1963

This month’s #CraftRoomDestashChallenge features a baby afghan made from reclaimed yarn. It’s been almost a year, but I finally finished the baby afghan my daughter asked for. I started before my grandson was born. He’s now 7 months old (!).

The rules for the Destash Challenge are to use items we have on hand to create something new. We’re allowed $10 to purchase supplies. This month I didn’t have to buy anything. You can read more about the pattern I used in this post.

About two years ago, when my oldest grandson was an infant, I tried my hand at making the Harvest Cardigan from Tin Can Knits. It was a great learning experience but I didn’t like the way it looked on me so I took it apart. There I was with lots of yards of Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable acrylic yarn (affiliate link) and a request from my daughter for a blanket for her baby.

I just could not get into this project. It wasn’t the pattern. I really enjoy working it. Certainly my grandson motivated me to work on it, but I kept putting it aside. I think it was the reclaimed yarn. It split very easily and was just not pleasant to work with.

Two months ago I decided I needed to suck it up and finish. I started carrying the blanket with me everywhere and worked on a side at a time. Eventually I finished and was able to cast off. I used an i-cord cast off which I feel gives a nice even edge.

The yarn was variegated and the pattern turned out to be rather pretty.  Now that I’ve washed and dried it, I like how it turned out. I’m relieved it’s finished, though! I’m more than ready to work on another project!

  5. I know the feeling of procrastinating in a project. Sometimes I give up altogether. But other times the person you want to give your creation to, is sooooo special that you simply suck it up! Well done! I love how it turned out. I am working currently on a summer top for myself. I wonder if I will be wearing it this year or the next 😉
