A Pair of Masculine Knit Hats for The Men in Your Life

Last Updated on March 22, 2019 by lydiaf1963

This is a busy season for knitters. It’s fun and satisfying to make gifts by hand, but it can be difficult to find patterns that are both quick and suit the intended wearer. This pair of masculine knit hats fits the bill when looking to create gifts for the men in your life.

Masculine Knit Hats They Will Wear

There’s nothing more frustrating than to put love, time and effort into making something that is never worn. I don’t think you’ll have that problem with these two hats. I love how the bold colors make the most of the simple designs.

MAXIMUS

A week or so ago, I featured this masculine hat at one of our link parties. I had the perfect yarn already in my stash so I ordered the pattern through Libby Jonson’s (Truly Myrtle) Ravelry page and started knitting. I was in too much of a hurry as I had to frog my hat when I realized I was short two stitches. Naturally I was at the point where I was supposed to start the decreases! Oh well, I got plenty of practice with the cabled section.

The yarn is an aran weight superwash merino from Rowan worked on 4.5mm (US size 7) double pointed needles. Some folks move the stitches manually when they make cables, but for this type of yarn I used a cable needle.

The pattern has instructions for different sizes. You’ll find written directions as well as a chart so you can use whichever you prefer. The cabled section is just a 24 stitch section of the hat, so I put those stitches on one DPN and worked from the chart. It was good practice, since I more or less made two hats, hahaha. After the cables, the rest of the hat is 2×2 rib. It can be made in less than a day…as long as you count correctly!

SWISH HAT

This is a free pattern from Ravelry that makes use of a series of purl stitches to make the decorative swish that moves across the front of the hat. One of the nice things is you can use any weight yarn you have in your stash. I used a different color of the same Rowan merino super wash and the same sized needles used to make the Maximus hat. This requires a little change to the pattern. For example, the original calls for casting on 100 stitches whereas for my yarn 84 is sufficient. I followed the pattern to make the swish and worked out the decreases when the crown was tall enough (see this post for more info on decrease math). Check out the pattern page for more ideas of the yarns you can use. Some of the tweedy blends are quite attractive and the simple design works for women as well.

Rick was willing to model the hats for me before we ship them across the Atlantic to my son (who has several hats but refuses to be photographed).

Update! Rick has his very own hat now! Check it out below ⇓⇓
